About Membership in the
American Institute of Building Design Washington Society

Why Join?

  • The association promotes the higest professional standards for building design vocation, through continuing education, experience, peer review, and professional standanding that enhances the abilities of its associate designers.
  • The association also helps to insure that building designers retain their right to practice under the laws that govern the state of Washington through its oversight of legislation, education, and public awareness.
  • Association activities include publication of a newsletter, coordination with design professionals and the construction industry, a membership mailing list, and other membership activities.

How to join

Join by filling out the application online:

  • Create a Username and Password
  • Log In to your user account
  • Fill out online information form
  • Upload 3 letters of recommendation: scan letters and send as jpg or send in pdf format. (Professional Level Only)
  • Upload 3 sets of working drawings:
    save plans in one of these formats- pdf, jpg, tif, dwg, dwf,dxf (Professional Level Only)
  • Upload transcripts if applicable (if education is part of qualifications/experience, a copy of transcript, letter of completion, or diploma is required)
  • Pay via PayPal the appropriate membership and initiation fee (see about membership levels)

Membership Levels: Description and Fees

Membership Dues

All dues listed below are the Annual Dues.
The Fiscal year begins Jauary 1ST.
When you join AIBDWA the annual dues for the national organization (AIBD) and the Washington Society (AIBDWA) *will be pro-rated as follows;

January - March: 100%
April - June: 75%
July-September: 50%
October-December: 100% (includes membership for the next fiscal year)
*NOTICE: The amount you pay is the amount that is assessed at the time of payment, which may vary from the amount you are shown when the application is initiated.

  • Active Professional member annual dues shall be $120.00
  • General member annual dues shall be $90.00
  • Retired member annual dues shall be $15.00
  • Student member annual dues shall be $15.00
  • Associate member (individual) annual dues shall be $25
  • Associate member corporate dues shall be
    • Silver $200
    • Gold $350
    • Platinum $600

 

In addition to the Washington Society Dues and Initiation fees, the national institute, AIBD, has an annual dues and initiation fee (see membership level description below for details)

Upon application for membership, professional and general members shall pay a $15.00 Initiation Fee in addition to the Institute initiation fee.

Applicants for membership shall have their first year society dues pro-rated from the time of application based on the formula established for Institute dues.

Membership Level Description

Designer Membership

Professional Building Designer Member: $530*

Professional members are required to obtain 8 continuing education (CE) hours per year.
Certified professional building designer members must meet requirements of and received certification from the National Council of Building Designer Certification and devote 50% or more work time to the profession of building design.

Professional building designer members are required to be engaged in the professional practice of building design for at least 5 years and devote 50% or more work time to the profession of building design. Up to two years of related education may be substituted for an equal amount of experience.

AIBD initiation fee: $45
Washington Society annual dues:$120
Washington Society Initiation Fee: $15

General Design Member: $415*
General members are not required to obtain CE hours.
General membership is for those who do not meet the requirements of any other level of membership.

Washington Society annual dues:$120

Design Student: $40.00*
Design student membership consists of students participating in courses of instruction in architecture, engineering, architectural drafting, or design technology at a university, college, vocational or high school, or individuals who are participating in on-the-job training.

AIBD initiation fee: $10
Washington Society annual dues: $15

Retired Member: $40.00*
Retired membership consists of Building designers who want to stay current and continue their association with the the Building Design Profession

Associate Membership Levels
Note: If you are already a Corporate Member of the National AIBD organization and you want to become an Associate member of the Washington Society (AIBDWA), please contact the national office at 800-366-2423.

Associate membership requirements:

Individual: An individual or firm whose business interest is related to the Building Design profession, as a contractor, sub-contractor, building supply company, building official, engineer, etc., whose interests are local in nature.

Business: Businesses who are in support of the purposes set forth in Article II, and who is desirous of lending their cooperation and support to the Society and whose interests are local in nature.


Associate Member Indivdual: $120*

Benefits:

  • Their membership is listed at the society roster as Associate member
  • Use the AIBDWA logo as it pertains to their business
  • May use Associate member under their business name

Washington Society annual dues: $25

Membership Application Process

  • The prospective member shall fill out the on line application form in full at the Society web site www.aibdwa.org.
  • General members will be required to submit at least one letter of recommendation along with a full application and pay required prorated dues.
  • Professional Members must upload all required drawings and documents at the society web site and pay required prorated dues.
  • All other members shall fill out full applications and pay required prorated dues.
