On January 27, 2007, the Washington Society
of the AIBD sponsored a seminar during its annual winter
meeting in Bellevue. The
Seminar was titled “Copyright Practice and Law,” and
presented by licensed architect Jeffrey deRoulet, AIBDWA of
Architects Northwest, Inc. and David Lowe, an Intellectual
Property attorney with Black, Lowe and Graham.
Jeffrey’s presentation was from a designer’s
point of view, while David’s was from an attorney’s.
They have had a client-attorney relationship for some time,
and both were quite comfortable in copyright law. Their
presentation was professional and dynamic, and it is hoped
they will be
available again in the future.
The handouts were very helpful,
including; architectural work copyrights, how designer’s
can live in harmony with the Copyright Act, and preparing
for architectural
works copyright
litigation.
Other handouts were copies of two cases of homes that Jeffrey
deRoulet had copyrighted, and felt other designers had
imitated. The plans were displayed, as were letters David
Lowe sent to
the surprised designing parties.
Since the AIBDWA was the sponsor
of this seminar, the Board is authorizing two (2) continuing
education units for those
who attended and signed the attendance sheet. To register
for the credits, download (see below), print , and fill out
the Continuing Education Credit Request Form , and attach
