About the Building Design Profession

 
 

The practice of architecture is regulated by the State of Washington, Department of Licensing. The term architect, architecture, architectural are preserved for the licensed architect and cannot be used by any other design professional.

State law relating to the practice of architecture contains provisions which allow the Professional Building Designer to provide design services in a limited capacity. These provisions create an area of practice which exempt the design professional from being licensed as an architect.

Those areas of design that non-licensed design professionals are allowed to provide design services for are;

Single family residence – new, remodel, alteration
Multi-family residence – new, remodel, alteration – 4 attached unit maximum
Commercial use – new, remodel, alteration – 4,000 square foot maximum

While the building designer profession is not currently regulated in the same manner as an architect, the profession does have a nationally accredited certification program that is administered by the National Council of Building Designer Certification. The NCBDC functions on a level of surety and competency assurance as that of the architects national accreditation agency does.
